Circa the Victorian era, these 14k gold Etruscan Revival earrings are reminiscent of angel wings. Suspended from golden flowers, the earrings are finely detailed, adorned with twisted wirework and gold beading. Their angelic motif has a double meaning: the earrings are architectural in shape and resemble old European cathedrals. When examined closely, the winged shape creates archways that even contain tiny quatrefoil windows at their peaks.
Etruscan Revival jewelry has a rich and interesting history. In the early 1800's there was a large excavation of Etruscan tombs outside of Rome. Within these tombs were pieces of original Etruscan jewelry. The Etruscans were master artisans. They created breathtaking pieces of jewelry through their use of gold wire and beading, colored gemstones and glass. The news of the excavation of these tombs, and the treasures contained inside them, spread throughout Europe. Etruscan style jewelry captured the imagination of the public and soon jewelers, particularly those in England, began to produce elaborate pieces of jewelry in the style of the Etruscans.
The earrings measure approximately 1 1/4” x 3/4”. They dangle about 1” below the ear. The earrings are unmarked, but test as 14k gold. Combined, they weigh 5.85 grams.
The earrings are in great condition. Behind the flowers, there are signs of residual solder from when the post backs were added to the earring. This does not effect the look of the earring and cannot be seen when worn.
