14K Gold Babylonian Lapis Intaglio Ring
This is a stunning 14kt gold and lapis intaglio ring with the intaglio being from Babylonia. Babylonia was an ancient Akkadian-speaking state in Mesopotamia. Perhaps best know for the tower of Bable, the Babylonians are also credited with inventing astronomy, mathematics, philosophy and crafting the first 12 month calendar. Lapis was treasured by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia. Lapis is considered one of the oldest known gemstones to man and has been adored for centuries. To this day lapis is treasured for its rich color.
The lapis intaglio was made between the 8th and 6th century B.C. a time known Neo- Babylonian. It traveled who knows where until it was fitted into this lovely 14kt yellow gold ring during the 1980s. What I love the most about this setting is how is highlights the Lapis tablet with a simple four prong setting.
You really feel the depth of the stone. The lapis is approximately 19.60mm in length and 13.45mm in width. This ring is a size 7 3/4 and may be sized with the help of your local jeweler. This piece weighs approximately 9.68 grams. This ring would be the perfect gift for the art history buff in your life. Alternatively keep it as gift and marvel at this piece of history!
The lapis intaglio is clearly the highlight of this ring. The simple ring design shows the lapis prominently.
