William the Fourth Burl King of England Wood Box circa 1837

$425.00

This masterfully made hand-carved burl wood box has a circular form and features a golden bronze medallion of William the Fourth. The box is made from a remarkable selection of Karelian Birch tree wood. The grain, or burl, and its colors take organic swirling forms that complement the hand-made qualities of the piece. Circa the 1830’s, the wood remains beautifully polished and has settled with age, adding natural beauty to the box. The lid fits but also has settled over the years. The tortoiseshell lining on the interior has a nice glow and amazing pattern.

The gold medallion bezel set at its center contains the profile image of William the Fourth, King of Great Britain from 1830-1837.

William succeeded his elder brother George the IV, becoming the last king and penultimate monarch of Britain's House of Hanover

William was succeeded by his niece Victoria who ushered in the Victorian age and reigned as queen from 1837-1901.

The medallion measures 1 7/8” and is covered with a protective concave glass surface.

The box is 2 7/8” x 1", and is unsigned. It makes a wonderful piece for a collection and is an ideal gift for someone with refined taste as well as appreciation for fine craftsmanship.
