Made in 1915 in Birmingham, England, the buckle on this black enamel pin symbolizes eternal love. Buckles were often seen in Victorian era jewelry, representing eternal love, but were also often worn as mourning jewelry, symbolizing that eternal love continues on into the afterlife. Here, the motif is repeated in Edwardian fashion--the black enamel and understated tone of this piece suggest that this was originally intended as mourning jewelry. The circular pin is sterling silver, with striking black enamel detailing. The buckle is off to the side, with both oval and rectangular loops, suggesting that the pin itself is a classic black leather belt, twisted into shape. It makes for a subtle, sophisticated, unique addition to a jacket or blazer.
The back of the pin contains the hallmarks for sterling silver, City of Birmingham, and the date letter for 1915. It is marked “Silver Gilt” as there was originally a thin layer of gold on the back of the pin, some of which is still visible alongside a lovely patina. The pin also contains the maker’s mark “AJS”.
