Rare 19th Century Indian Silver Calling Card Case

$775.00

A remarkable calling card of Indian origin made during the Raj Period, in the 1880s. This sturdy silver case has two highly ornate depictions of different god like figures in circle patterns- 8 on one side and six on the other. The case is tested to 900 silver, and although is quite antique can still be used today because it is very solid in structure and silver- it weighs 3 troy ounces, or 95 grams. On one of the sides it has been engraved MGL. It is a unique piece, styled after the British or European calling cards made for the import market but instead of being embellished with western subjects it has eastern imagery, possibly making it for an Indian businessman. It is 1/4 of an inch deep and a rectangle of 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches.

This silver item is quite versatile and a wonderful utilitarian object. Would make a great addition to any silver collection.
