Victorian Gold Fill Beetle Brooch

$275.00

This Victorian brooch is emblematic of the naturalism found in jewelry from the late 19th century. Bugs were a popular motif, and the beetle was a particularly important symbol, representing renewal and transformation. The quintessential Victorian beetle is perfectly depicted in this brooch. With a dark red prong-set paste stone for the thorax, a matte gold abdomen, and wavy legs and arms, the beetle is whimsically lifelike. Red paste cabochons dot the bug’s eyes, and creamy pearl-esque paste stones accentuate the bug’s antennae. The brooch is cute and animated, and makes a playful addition to a blazer or jacket.

The brooch measures 1 5/8” x 7/8” and weighs 4.7 grams.

Circa 1880’s.
